Just as trout rod actions have evolved considerably in recent times, so too are variations occurring between the design and function of double handed rods for Spey-Casters around the world. From what we have seen, it would also appear that this resurgence is heading in two very different directions.

There are those manufacturers who put all their effort into producing Spey-Casting Rods that will cast well in tournaments. Whilst there are others, ourselves included, who focus more on the advanced casting techniques used in real life situations, the Spey-Casting art form, not just a means to an end.

For us, 'Spey-Casting' is as much to do with fishing short-casts in confined pocket waters as it is coping with long open pools in difficult winds. Spey-Casting is about shaping and positioning the 'D' loop to match the bank-side profile, tree-line canopy or angle of the cast.

In experienced hands, it's switching from right-hand-up to left-hand-up, depending on which side of river you're fishing, relative to the strength and direction of the wind. It's more about continual fluid movements that culminate in a final moment of explosive delivery.

It's also about manipulating Spey-line overhang, rod 'drift' and lay-back rod loading, stopping, pitching the trajectory and sometimes slicing the loop.

For us, 'Spey-Casting' is more of a means to a beginning than it is to an end.

'Spey-Casting' may continue to evolve but the XS-P 'Spey' is already here!

 XS-P Spey Rods

Fly casting with double handed rods is not always about Spey-casting long lines, long distances. On smaller rivers, we've had to adapt our casting and fishing techniques to meet the sometimes more demanding challenges encountered by way of pot-water, plunge pools, check-weirs and croy's, trees in the back-cast and low hanging branches in the fore. The enchanting English 'West Country' Rivers, Tamar & Torridge, steeped in a history all of their own, offer every fly caster all of these challenges and more.

What's needed on these smaller rivers is a rod that will cast lines with short head lengths and small to medium sized flies into close-quarter situations. Where the medium stroke action, needed for 'switch casting' a sink tip is the most effective mechanism for setting up a change in direction and where turnover and presentation are everything.
